Simple solutions for an eco friendly house

Eco friendly house. Whilst there have been a number of government and industry-led initiatives that have aimed to limit negative environmental habits, it is still up to us as individuals to keep our homes as eco friendly as possible.

Although going green can sometimes require a little extra effort and financial outlay, there are a number of ways in which we can all help our planet courtesy of some of these environmentally-sound home solutions.

Limit energy wastage

By simply changing a few our of our daily habits, we can all make a massive difference in reducing energy wastage. Turning off electrical appliances at the wall when they’re not in use will cut your electricity bills and dramatically decrease your home’s carbon footprint. Similarly, seeking home appliances that have a better energy-use rating is something that should be aimed for when looking for new products such as refrigerators and washing machines.

In the cold winter months, it’s a good idea to see what methods can be utilised to limit fuel use. The Energy Saving Trust state that between £25 and £50 could be saved through draft-proofing your home, and when needing a little help to stay warm, it’s a good idea to make sure that you’re using the most efficient heating technology available. This can take the form of electric radiators from brands such as Verismart who are able to transform 100% of the power drawn from a wall socket into heat, unlike the traditional and costly central heating systems.

Pollution cutbacks

Similarly, it’s not just energy use that can be decreased in the home, as simple methods of limiting the amount of packaging we throw away can do a lot in reducing the need for landfill sites. This can be achieved by aiming to purchase products that use green-friendly materials, or simply by cutting down on unnecessary expenditure altogether.

Most of our homes are able to take advantage of kerbside recycling schemes that require us to sort our waste into differing types of materials. And it’s also a good idea to flatten any items that are thrown in the bin to limit the vast effort needed to take our waste away.

Although we’ve all inherited something of a throwaway culture, many of us will have been embracing the make-do-and-mend ethos that seeks to extend the life of many items through the upcycling trend that can not only save you some pennies, but can provide a new outlet for your creativity too.
